Phase 1: Desktop Study - Have you been asked to source a desktop study by your Local Planning Authority? Are you wondering why? A desktop study uses a site history check, and various other literature sources to ascertain the risk of exposure of people and and environment (receptors) to contaminants in the soil (source)

Phase 2: Geo-Environmental Site Investigation - If a desktop study suggests that there may be an unacceptable risk to residents / workers in the proposed development / alteration then a quantitative risk assessment must be carried out.

Phase 3: Remediation - If your site in contaminated. Then you will need to clean it up, Southwest Environmental Limited can advise on the best options for your site, based on the type of contaminants and the locality of your site.

Phase 4: Validation - After the site has been remediated the contaminants should be down to a safe level. . . but you have the check. A validation report proves whether or not that the remediation measures have worked.

EA releases "Guiding Principles for Land Contamination"

Te EA has released a collection of "guidance that replaces our document ’Environment Agency requirements for land contamination reports’." The guidance is aimed at land owners, specialists and consultants and clarifies the governments stance on dealing with the large areas of contaminated land in the UK.
